Construction Question

Hi,

I need help solving an assignment for my CSTN 1131 (Small Buildings) course about joist and beam selection.

We are given a single-storey house that is 42-6 long and 27-8 wide. There is one beam running along the long direction, and the joists run perpendicular to it. The beam is located 10-0 from one wall and is supported at both ends and can have a maximum of two columns. All lumber must be No.2 SPF.

I need to:

  • Calculate the two joist spans (shorter and longer span)
  • Determine the supported length of the beam
  • Calculate the maximum span between beam supports (column spacing)
  • Select appropriate joist sizes (same depth for both spans) using the span tables
  • Select an appropriate beam size using the beam table
  • Compare the allowable spans from the tables with the required spans

Could you please solve this step-by-step and show all calculations clearly using the span tables?
