Writing Question

Play Brochure Assignment

You are an early childhood education teacher teaching at a school that follows a developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum. Children spend a good deal of their day in play that they have chosen.

It is the beginning of the school year and some parents of children in your class are concerned that their child is spending too much time playing and want you to teach their child in a traditional, direct-instruction manner. Anticipating that other parents may need reassurance about this play-based approach, you decide to draft a letter to or create a brochure for families about the benefits of play and play-based learning.

Directions:

  • Create a newsletter or a brochure (approximately 2 pages/back to front) for families that addresses the following:
    • What play is (describe it) and different types of play children might engage in
    • Why play is developmentally appropriate for young children
    • The cognitive benefits of play with 2 examples
    • How play supports at least 1 other developmental and/or content areas (social-emotional, physical, language, literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, creative arts) with at least one example
    • Information about how you support play in the classroom and the differing roles for you (the teacher) during play
    • Examples of how you plan activities/lessons around childrens play interests and or areas of the classroom that can support play
  • Write a 1-page rationale explaining the decisions you made about what to include in your newsletter and how to present the information. Make sure to link play and planning to what we know about high quality early childhood curriculum. Also, describe any concerns, priorities or things teachers need to be aware of in this kind of communication.

Some tips:

  • Think about how to make it attractive and accessible to families
  • The content of the letter/brochure should reflect your understanding of theories of and research on development and play but remember that this is for families, not an academic paper, so think about the tone and presentation of the information in terms your relationship with them.
  • Class slides and the textbook should be plenty for source material – you shouldn’t need to research additional sources – but make this material your own based on how you understand the content we have covered so far in this class and put it in your own words.
  • Be sure to check the spelling and grammar of both your letter/brochure and your accompanying rationale.
  • I have included a few examples of brochures to review.
  • You have to have a Solid understanding of DAP theory evident in brochure/letter and essay; clear and well-explained intentions re what is included; clear link to what we know about high quality EC curriculum; and why to form partnership with families, Full, thorough description of play and significance of 3 or more types of play discussed, Clear explanation of DAP and complete discussion of how play is developmentally appropriate, Complete description of cognitive benefits with two examples of play, 1 area of development/content are discussed as being supported by play with an example, Full, thorough description of how teachers support play including various roles during childrens play, Full description of how play is planned for with an example, Brochure Appearance & Writing has to be Attractive and engaging, clearly written without jargon, flows well from one topic to the next; no structural or grammatical issues
