Manifest Destiny ( westwardho.jpg)

What does the image that forms the background of this page tell us about the ideas behind the concept of Manifest Destiny? What does it tell us about the way that 19th century Americans viewed race/whiteness and the right to take land from Native Americans and Mexicans?

Based on the power point presentation and video provided this week, please offer your thoughts on the follow:

  1. What were some of the key events/trends of change in the years between 1820-1848 that helped the United States expand westward? How did this expansion increase tension over the issue of slavery?
  2. In what ways was expansion of the United States and the concept of Manifest Destiny based on the ideas white supremacy? How might this have added to growing tensions over slavery?
  3. How did the Mexican American War and the territories taken from Mexico create the conditions necessary for a political conflict over slavery?
  4. Why didn’t the events/trends that we looked at this week lead to a Civil War in 1848? In otherwords, while all of the things that we looked at this week contributed to growing tension over the issue of slavery, the Civil War did not break out in 1820, or 1839, or 1848 for that matter? What was missing?
