Remaining Neutral and Nonjudgemental in Counseling Discussio…

The texts for this week stress how therapists’ personal values, culture, and privilege affect counseling interactions. Kottler (2022) talks about the “myth of neutrality,” saying that therapists may mistakenly push their own beliefs on clients. Geldard & Geldard (2012) underline the importance of being self-aware to avoid value conflicts that can hurt rapport and efficacy.

How can counselors remain effective and nonjudgmental when they become aware of a personal value conflict with a client? What strategies might you use to manage your own values in session, and when is it appropriate to disclose your position or refer out due to irreconcilable difference?
