7.7 (Graded Discussion) How Democracies (Due April 19th)

Hi Everyone,

For this week we are looking at our continuing debate about democracy, abut also begin to discuss authoritarianism. Since we have our midterm coming up the workload for the week will be scaled back a bit.

Part of political science is engaging in controversial discussions. One of the ongoing conversations in our country is about the state of our democracy, and if we are moving towards authoritarian forms of governance or politics in general. One controversial recent book is by Levitsky and Ziblatt who argue in How Democracies Die that we are moving in an authoritarian direction especially with President Trump.

So for our discussion, I want you to read the excerpt from How Democracies Die, the readings from Appleabum and Conway, and ask yourselves if the United States is undergoing a period of authoritarianism? Now much of this debate has centered on former President Donald Trump, but what I want you to think about is (1) what are the criteria for measuring authoritarianism (Levistsky and Ziblatt); (2) DO you think the readings by Appleabum support the argument that the US is perhaps experiencing or has experienced recently an authoritarian moment; (3) is authoritarianism only something that comes from the political right (conservatism)?

Here is the Precise Question I want you to engage in after doing the readings:

I want you to engage in these questions around a discussion regarding former President Donald Trump. Do you agree or disagree that President Trump was/is or was not an authoritarian leader? Why or Why Not?
