  • Demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of broad categories of medications.
  • Create a comprehensive and appropriate client education in relation to prescribed pharmacologic agents.
  • Analyze the effects of single and multiple drug regimens on the clients health and functioning.

Overview

In this course, there are two continuing medical education (CME) assignments. The controlled substances assignment requires the documentation of 15 hours of education on controlled substances regarding opioid medication and pain management.

Numerous organizations provide free continuing education on this subject. It is not difficult to find 15 free CME credits for this assignment. However, you may attend a conference if that is more convenient for you. The continuing medical education (CME) certificate must indicate what portion of the conference was related to opioids and pain management and the date must be within the current term you are enrolled in this course.

Below is a list of links that offer free CME. You many need to create an account or register on some or all of these sites. You may also use other CME activities not listed. However, a certificate of completion with earned hours is necessary to show proof of your work.

CME activities for this unit may include but are not limited to:

  • Effective pain management
  • Risks of abuse and addiction associated with opioid medication
  • Identification of patients at risk for substance use disorders
  • Counseling patients about the side effects, addictive nature, and proper storage/disposal of prescription medications
  • Appropriate prescription quantities for prescription medications that have an increased risk of abuse

Opioid antagonists, overdose prevention treatments, and instances in which a patient may be advised on both the use of and ways to access opioid antagonists and overdose prevention treatments
