Probation is one of the most common correctional responses used in the criminal justice system. Instead of being incarcerated, many offenders are supervised in the community under conditions designed to promote accountability while reducing the likelihood of future criminal behavior. Probation officers must evaluate risk, monitor compliance with court orders, and connect individuals with programs that support rehabilitation. These decisions are rarely simple because probation supervision must balance several goals, including public safety, offender accountability, and opportunities for behavioral change. Different professionals within the justice system may also have different perspectives about how supervision should be structured. In this discussion, you will analyze a probation case and defend a supervision approach from a specific professional perspective. This activity highlights how probation decisions often involve competing priorities within the correctional system.
Prepare for this discussion by reviewing and completing the embedded activities in:
Part I – Your Initial Post:
Your original response is due by Thursday of the module at 11:59 p.m.
-
- Your original response should be at least 250 words.
- Select one of the sentencing scenarios below.
- You must support your response with at least one source from the course materials, using an APA-formatted in-text citation(s) and a reference section in APA format. (Hint: you can cite your textbook.)
Scenario:
Parker Flynn, age 24, has been sentenced to three years of probation after being convicted of burglary of an unoccupied residence. This is Parkers first felony conviction, but there are two prior misdemeanor arrests for shoplifting. Parker recently lost a job and has struggled to maintain steady employment.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge noted that incarceration could be imposed if Parker fails to comply with probation conditions. The court has asked probation officers to determine what type of supervision strategy should be used.
For this discussion, you will select one of the four positions below.
Perspective 1: Public Safety First
From this perspective, probation supervision should focus primarily on protecting the community and preventing additional crimes.
In your response:
How frequently should Parker be monitored?
Why is strong supervision necessary in this case?
Part II – Peer Response Criteria:
You must respond to at least two peers by Sunday of the Module by 11:59 p.m.
- Peer responses should be to peers who selected other initial prompts than the one you chose.
- Peer responses should be at least 150 words.
- Structured Peer Responses Should:
- Identify one supervision strategy they proposed.
- Explain whether you agree or disagree with their reasoning.
- All references should be cited and listed in a reference section in APA format.
- You are expected to participate on a minimum of two days each module.
