Lead through Change

Health care informatics professionals are constantly addressing situations that require them to practice leadership by guiding teams and individuals through change in ways that are grounded in vision, guidance, and direction to improve patient care and outcomes. Effective leadership in health informatics is an interactive process that relies on strong communication skills, stewardship, credible expertise, and ethical decision-making. Professionals must act as change agents by envisioning goals, setting priorities, managing change, and making decisions while fostering both leadership and followership within interdisciplinary teams. To be successful, leaders must demonstrate credibility, honesty, competence, and the ability to inspire and motivate others, including developing and renewing followers and future leaders. By collaboratively solving problems, communicating transparently, and building trust, informatics leaders are able to formulate and communicate a compelling vision and engage stakeholders in achieving organizational transformation.

Read the Meridian Health Network Case Study document, located in topic resources. For this assignment, you will play the role of Dr. Alicia Grant, the projects informatics manager. Your goal is to develop and deliver the 20-30 minute project kickoff speech to an audience of organizational stakeholders that will be involved in the change initiative. You will prepare the speech storyboard in StoryboardThat and record the speech through GoReact by using the screen share function.

The project kickoff speech should be designed to explain how you will lead the project and should motivate stakeholders to engage in achieving the shared goal of transitioning to the cloud-based EHR platform. Of utmost importance is modeling leadership that is honest and exhibits professional competence and fairness to build trust and reassure stakeholders that you will lead ethically. The project kickoff storyboard and GoReact video should focus on each of the key aspects listed below.

Vision Setting and Stewardship

  • Explain the vision and connect the change to improve patient care, reduce redundancies, and long-term operational efficiency.
  • Explain how you will steward the organizational mission while keeping stakeholder needs in the forefront. Include a discussion of how you will ensure transparency relevant to risk, timelines, and expected outcomes.

Prioritization and Decision-Making

  • Describe the structured decision frameworks that will be applied to sequence tasks, allocate resources, and communicate rationales for decisions.
  • Explain how you will ensure that decisions are fair, ethical, and balanced to best meet the organizational needs and the needs of stakeholders.

Ethical Leadership and Credibility

  • Model honesty, professional competence, and fairness.

Change Management Integration

  • Implement elements from established change management models to create urgency, form cross-departmental change champions, communicate the vision, reduce barriers, celebrate short-term wins, and reinforce new workflows.

Communication Strategy

  • Create a visual that illustrates the communication strategy and includes all key stakeholder roles and specific information to be shared with each. Include the frequency of communication and how delays and needs will be communicated.
  • Describe the collaborative problem-solving methods that will be used and how feedback loops will be incorporated for real-time course correction.

Followership and Developing Future Leaders

  • Create a visual that illustrates key department champions and explains how they will be involved in the decision-making process, including tasks that will be delegated to each.
  • Explain how the change champions will assist with training peers, advocating for workflow needs, and reinforcing the project vision among their teams.

Applying what you have learned from the topic Resources and your own research, create the visuals for your presentation using StoryboardThat, including no more than 15 cells/screens, excluding the title and supporting resource cells/screens. The content should be presented in a conversational way to engage the viewers/listeners as you set the vision for the project and motivate the audience.

In addition to the key content noted above, the Storyboard should also include the following:

  • A title for the storyboard.
  • An overview of the project.
  • Cite a minimum of three supporting resources to support the ideas presented.

When you have finished creating the storyboard, take time to practice your project kickoff speech. Ensure that you are professional in your language, intonation, expression, and speech. When you feel ready to present the speech, record it in GoReact using the screen share feature so both the storyboard and your face are visible.

Remember, video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.

In addition to the content listed above, you will be assessed on the following:

  • Employing leadership and followership methods, concepts, and tools to motivate others toward accomplishing a health informatics vision.
  • Demonstrating leadership behaviors, including vision, communication skills, stewardship, acting as a change agent, and developing and renewing followers and future leaders.
  • Articulating goals, setting priorities, employing strategies for managing change, making decisions, and communicating, and serving as a symbol of one who is willing to take risks and has credible expertise, and guide others by motivating other leaders as well as those who will follow.
  • Demonstrating credibility, honesty, competence, ability to inspire, and the ability to formulate and communicate a vision.

Support the presentation with a minimum of three scholarly references.

Submit the link to the storyboard in a .pdf in GoReact when making the video. Ensure that others can access and view the link to your storyboard prior to submission.

Solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
