Humanities Question

Purpose:

The purpose of this short response essay is for you to demonstrate the Course Objective of college-level writing, and critical thinking. This assignment meets the *Gordon Rule requirements for this General Education course. Therefore, this assignment is graded as PASS/FAIL.

You will synthesize and analyze the assigned material, think critically on a topic relating to that material, develop a perspective or point of view on that topic and communicate your perspective in writing.

Directions:

  • Pick one of the following prompts.
  • Write a 1-2 page (250 – 500 words), MLA formatted, persuasive essay. Include a Works Cited page and intext citations of those sources.
  • Reference only the textbook and sources within the module. Using sources outside of these will result in a failure grade.
  • Essays must include a clear and direct thesis that answers the prompt.
  • Review the Grading Rubric so you understand the expectations of the assignment and how your submission will be evaluated. This assignment is graded as PASS/FAIL.

What is a Persuasive Essay?

*It is NOT an informative essay.

The purpose of a persuasive essay is for you to effectively communicate a position or particular point of view on a specific topic. This means you will develop a Claim which you will prove with supporting evidence.

Though you will use ‘factual information’ to prove your claim, it is not an informative essay, meaning, the purpose is not to summarize or re-state information from the text, but rather do analyze, synthesize and apply the content to a specific topic of investigation, using the information to support your position on the topic.

*The supporting evidence for this assignment must be from the textbook and module sources, only.

Prompts: Choose One – Reference Ch. 4-12 and module sources only.

  1. Why is pilgrimage necessary? Discuss the pilgrimage rituals for each of the monotheistic faiths we studied and analyze the social, political and economic impact of these rituals on humanity.
  2. Are ‘Holy Wars’ justified? Analyze the impacts of the Crusades and iconoclasm on humanity and civilization.
  3. Is media responsible for revolution? How much is the printing press responsible for enabling the Protestant, Political and Scientific Revolutions?
  4. Do we owe the creation of our nation to the Renaissance? In what ways did the rise of Humanism in the Renaissance and the philosophes of the 17th and 18th century influence the revolutions of the 18th century?
