Let’s return to the Pre-Socratics for the fundamentals of knowledge and reality.
At the end of Chapter One read the section on Pre-Socratic philosophers pp. 45-47.
Read the Power Point below on the differences between these thinkers. The Power Point includes a few more thinkers than the text. If you don’t have a text yet, don’t worry. Use the Power Point below or the OERI text.

Initial Post:
- Purpose: There is no right or wrong answer here. The purpose of this exercise is to begin to think philosophically and “Do” philosophy. You will be graded on showing you have read and thought about the questions.
- Directions: Respond to the following two questions in two paragraphs.
Question 1: According to your own life experiences, do you feel that the underlying principle of the world and experience is:
- Change and Motion (how things appear)? or,
- Enduring Permanence (the unseen reality, such as atomic structure, spiritual realm, formal nature such as unseen Forms, mathematical truths), or if both, how do they interact? This points us to two important concepts: “Appearance” and “Reality”.
Question 2: Directions: Which Pre-Socratic view appeals to you? Allow your mind free reign over the ideas, but make sure your response shows reference to specific Pre-Socratic thinker or thinkers by explaining their views and referencing them by their name.
