Objectives: Analyze the interrelationships among health views, cultural practices, religion, and food. Create a nutrition intervention for a select cultural population

Directions:

Introduction – views of health (5 points)

Discuss how the definitions of health, sickness, and disease vary across cultures. Explain how the biomedical worldview differ from pluralistic health care systems. Include some examples of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) in your explanation.

Part A: Ethnicity* food habits and nutrition (5 points)

  • Choose an ethnic-group from the Food and Culture textbook and label the group Part A: ‘ethnic group’
  • Use multiple scientific journal articles with proper citations (see directions above)
  • Describe their dietary practices using citations and references (no subjective accounts)
  • Explain how they use foods stay healthy or cure a sickness
  • Discuss chronic diseases that they are at risk for (use scientific sources)

Part B: Religion, dietary habits, and health (5 points)

  • Choose a particular religious group (different from part A) and label the group with your specific religion Part B: ‘ Religion’
  • Discuss how their religion influences their food choices and food habits
  • Describe the health benefits and/or health concerns the practices may cause

Part C: Educational intervention using intercultural communication. This semester you are developing a Diabetes prevention intervention for adults in a Hispanic community. (10 points)

Consider increasing fruits and vegetables and increasing physical activity when forming your main objectives

  • Explain how you would develop your intervention by considering cultural and age preferences
  • How would you test if your intervention worked? You want to test if they made the behavior change. (Hint: provide an example of three questions you would ask on a survey before and after the program was over)
