Writing Question

Purpose

This assignment will help you to critically engage with poetry to discern literary devices and modes in a poem and analyze their functions within the text through your creation of a multimedia presentation.

Skills

This assignment will focus on critical reading and application of both literary devices and literary themes. You will practice:

  • Critical reading skills
  • Identification and application of thematic mode(s)
  • Paraphrase and/or summary skills
  • Creative presentation

*This assignment aligns with Learning Outcomes: LO1, LO5, LO7, LO12

This assessment will also serve to verify your identity in this course. In addition to submitting your project, you will need to submit a photo of your student ID or state-issued ID. You can cover your address, ID number, or other identifying information with a post it note or sticker, but your face and name should be clear. This identification verification process is required to pass the course and is in lieu of an in-person or virtually proctored exam.

Tasks

In this unit, you have learned about imagery, modes, and theme. For this assignment, you will be exploring how these aspects of the poem work together to convey meaning.

To provide perspective, think of this presentation as a means of “teaching” your audience; you are the “expert” on the poem. Share why you chose this poem, a brief summary of the poem’s topic, your interpretation of the poem’s theme, and the specific lines, literary devices, and/or examples that support the theme you identified. In order to ensure your video meets the parameters of the assignment and is effective for your audience, be sure to follow the composition steps below and rehearse your presentation prior to recording for submission. Keep in mind that most of us are apprehensive about at least one factor of the assignment: working with poetry, speaking in front of others, recording a presentation, etc.; however, this assignment is NOT evaluating your acting/speaking skills but rather providing you with an alternative medium to share and discuss your experiences with course content.

Please take the opportunity to be creative with this assignment if you would like to do so, providing graphics, sounds, or other presentation aids that you feel support your discussion of imagery, mode, and theme. Please ensure, however, that your face is clearly visible during the entire presentation. You may use AI to generate images, or use a resource such as unsplash.com or pexels.com if you wish to do so.

NOTE: Do not choose any of the texts used in sample assignments or instructional videos in this course. Choose one of the poems your instructor has assigned for this unit.

Part 1

Read your selected poem both silently and aloud several times. Consider reviewing your annotations on a printout of the poem to help you summarize lines or stanzas of the poem.

Part 2

Use the following format to help you organize your video:

  • Introduce the title and author of your chosen poem, drawn from one of the Unit 2 poetry selections.
  • Provide a brief summary (paraphrase) of the poem for the viewer.
  • Identify and explain your analysis of the poem’s theme to the viewer, providing examples of literary devices and lines that demonstrate this theme. Be sure to read the corresponding lines of the poem aloud for your viewer.
  • To close, propose why this poem would be worthy of reading and analyzing for other readers.
  • Your video should reflect your practice and planning. It should be 2 to 3 minutes long.
  • You will submit your notes/outline for your presentation as part of the assignment.
  • No use of AI or external/secondary sources is allowed for this assignment.

Part 3

Submit your ID, your video, and your notes/outline to the assignment folder using the following instructions:
