Instructions Please note that acceptable mastery of the skills and competencies demonstrated in this assignment are critical to effective counselling. Learning Objectives To identify and practice reflection of feelings and meaning To identify and practice planning and focusing summaries To identify and practice discrepancies To understand role of cultural humility in counseling To reflect on own current abilities Purpose This activity is designed to provide students with numerous ways of learning, practicing, discussing, and processing the needed skills to build and maintain a therapeutic alliance. As a group activity, there is a consideration of ones own and others bias and experiences and the ability to collaborate and discuss a variety of skills needed in the helping profession. Instructions Begin by signing up on the Signup Sheet for Weekly Activities Groups for Unit 3 and 4 to form groups of 3-4 students within the class. Students may utilize the online meeting space to meet as a group. Choice of meeting platform is up to the group. Before meeting with your group read the assigned resources and text chapters for the Module Week. Be sure to look over the rubric to anticipate group discussion questions and answers. Meet with your group to go over the rubric questions together. Then, independently, write a 4-5 page (minimum of 250 words per question for discussion portion of each task) reflection paper exploring in detail the prompt questions to each exercise. You may utilize answers you have formed as a group or, if you decide upon reflection to add any answers of your own that are different than the group answer, you may add those instead. Decide for yourself what the best answer is, using the group experience as a guide only. In a brief introductory paragraph, please explain the participants in your group, how you met, and your overall takeaway from the group experience. You will need at least 3 group members in your group. Do not have more than 4. Then address each activity as explained below: 1. Activity One: Exercise 1: Practice in Identifying Feelings and Reflecting Feelings in Writing from Young (2024) p. 154 – This is to be a group exercise. The number in the group should be 3-4 individuals from your class. Please follow the directions fully. Discuss with your group the answers you all came up with and your interpretations of the answers. For the purpose of this paper, please provide your answers to all eight statements. Do not repeat the statements themselves, just your answers. Then, with critical thought and support, discuss in a minimum of 250 words your group experience in doing this exercise by answering these questions: How did you do in reflecting feeling? What did you do well? What did you learn in working as a group in doing this exercise? What do you need to work on to feel more capable in this ability? 2. Activity Two: Exercise 1: Reflecting Meaning from Young (2024) p. 178 This is a group exercise. The number in the group should be 3-4 individuals from your class. Please follow the directions fully. One of you will act as client, another, the observer, and the third as the helper (counselor). Practice reflections of meanings by using the prompts provided. Explore together how to extract meaning from what the client is sharing based on the provided prompts. For the purpose of this paper, with critical thought and support, discuss in a minimum of 250 words your experience with this exercise and include the answers to the following questions: How did your group do in reflecting meaning? What did you all do well? What do you all need to improve upon? What did you learn in working as a group in doing this exercise? What do you need to work on to feel more capable in this ability? 3. Activity Three: Discussion 1: Planning and Focusing Summaries from Young (2024) p. 180 This is a group exercise. The number in the group should be 3-4 individuals from your class. Please follow the directions fully. Read the case study of Joan and Lynn on p. 158 and share your summaries with one another. Discuss within the group the 4 questions in the discussion area: Was the summary no longer than two or three sentences?; Did the summary essentially capture the major points?; Did the summary include the key events, feelings, and meanings expressed?; Is there a hopeful tone to the planning summary? Do not share the answer to those 4 questions here. For the purpose of this paper, share in your submission ONE perfected summary regarding Joan and Lynn – it is your choice to write either a planning OR a focusing summary. Explain what makes it either a planning or focus summary . Then, with critical thought and support, discuss, with a minimum of 250 words, your group experience and include the answers to the following: How did you do in making a summary? What did you do well? What do you need to improve upon? What did you learn in working as a group in doing this exercise? What do you need to work on to feel more capable in this ability? 4. Activity Four: Written Exercises: Exercise 1: Identifying Discrepancies from Young (2024) p. 208 This is a group exercise. The number in the group should be 3-4 individuals from your class. Please follow the directions fully. Read through all 5 client situations listed in your text. Share and discuss your answers with the group. For the purpose of this paper, share in your individual assignment 2 out of the 5 perfected discrepancies and then, with critical thought and support, discuss, with a minimum of 250 words, your group experience. Include the answers to the following questions: How did you do in making the proper discrepancies? What did you do well? What do you need to improve upon? What did you learn in working as a group in doing this exercise? What do you need to work on to feel more capable in this ability? 5. Activity Five: Exercise 1: Cultural Humility from Young (2024) pgs. 78-84; term found on pgs. 50, 76 This is a group exercise. The number in the group should be 3-4 individuals from your class. Please follow the directions fully. Read through the designated pages, concentrating on the terms cultural humility and cultural arrogance. Read through the “Stop and Reflect: Culturally Bound Assumptions about Don, the therapist, and his client, Mira on p. 77 and discuss all 4 questions listed together as a group. For the purpose of this paper, consider cultural humility and cultural arrogance and then, with critical thought and support, discuss, with a minimum of 250 words or less, your group experience and include the answers to the following questions: How did you feel about these terms overall? How do you see yourself maneuvering these skill in session with a client? What did you learn in working as a group in doing this exercise; for instance, what was the consensus regarding the example of Don and Mira? What do you need to work on to feel more capable in this ability? Structure Required components: Title page, reference page, headings. Do not add an abstract. Do not use a running head. Length of Assignment: Each of your answers (i.e., not including references or title page) should consist of a minimum of 250 words for the discussion portion of each prompt(s). This 250 minimum word count does not include any specific answers needed (such as the requested 8 statements in Exercise One). As a guide, 4-5 double-spaced typed pages is needed. Times New Roman font size 12 is required. Format: Please format your assignment in Word (files with extension .doc or .docx), or Rich Text Format (files with extension .rtf). References: At minimum, please include the Young (2024) text as well as two peer reviewed journal articles that are 10 years old or less Considerations Please use the rubric as a guide. Write succinctly and from first person point of view. Use headings and subheadings. Resources Any sources used to support your written narrative should be cited using correct APA format. Although Wikipedia can be a useful starting place to gather very general information no Wikipedia references will be accepted as scholarly citations. Use the Yorkville University Library and the EBSCO tool for academic search. It is important to select credible sources for assignments.
