Understanding Trauma Across Professional Roles in Sports and Education Video submission in content in D2l
Objective:
Graduate students will analyze traumas impact on individuals, teams, and organizations by reflecting on a professionals prerecorded video presentation. Students will present their reflections as a video. They will also engage with peers responses to expand their understanding of trauma-informed practices across different roles, such as teachers, coaches, athletic directors (ADs), strength trainers, and sports psychologists.
The video is not specifically directed toward our field, but we must understand what our students and athletes are going through to be able to understand their behaviors. In the video he talks about the same trauma in two different people. What could make it different is if they had the ability or tools to cope with what happened in their life.
Part 1: Analyze the Professional Presentation
1. Watch the Prerecorded Video:
The video features a professional discussing trauma recognition, its effects, and trauma-informed strategies you can use as one of the following:
o Teachers
o Coaches
o Athletic Directors (ADs)
o Strength Trainers
o Sports Psychologists
2. Initial Response Options:
After watching the videos, students will reflect on the content and create a response in the following formats:
Video Post (5 minutes) minimum: Record a video summarizing your insights.
Your response should include:
Key Takeaways: Highlight three major points from the video that resonate with you.
Connection to Your Role: Reflect on how these insights apply to your current or future career (e.g., as a coach, AD, teacher, etc.).
Practical Application: Share one trauma-informed strategy you could adopt or recommend based on the content.
Part 2: Peer Engagement
Engage with Peers:
Respond to at least three classmates posts (video or written) to foster collaborative learning.
Response Requirements:
For each peers post:
Engaging Comments: Provide two thoughtful comments expanding on or connecting to their ideas.
Example: I like how you mentioned the coachs role in addressing trauma during high-pressure situations. I wonder if this approach could be adapted for strength trainers working with small groups.
Two Quality Questions: Ask two open-ended questions that prompt critical thinking and deeper discussion.
Example: You suggested creating a safe space for athletes. How would you handle a situation where an athlete is resistant to opening up about their trauma?
