Though you may write on multiple, you only need to choose ONE historical topic. As you choose, ask yourself: What historical event or person shaped my experiences, my familys story, or the opportunities available to me today? Below are some topic suggestions and guiding questions, though you do not have to choose from this list: Immigration Laws or Migration Events What historical event or law led to migration? Why did you or your family migrate? What made immigration easier or more difficult at that time? How did this history shape your or your familys path to the United States? If you choose immigration, you must discuss the historical event and/or law that caused or shaped the migration. Spanish Conquest of Mexico How did the conquest shape Mexican culture, religion, language, or identity? How do those historical effects still appear in your life today? English Conquest of North America How did English colonization influence U.S. culture, language, or systems? How do those historical influences affect your daily life? The Columbian Exchange What foods, products, or habits in your life came from this exchange? How did the Columbian Exchange transform societies on a global scale? The Mexican-American War & the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo How did the United States come to claim the land you live on today? How has this historical event shaped life in California or the Southwest? How does this history connect to your identity or community? Careers What historical events, movements, or figures influenced your career path? How did history open (or limit) opportunities in that field? Womens Liberation How did women before you pave the way for opportunities you have today? How do your experiences compare to those of women in earlier generations? Race and Racism What has your personal experience been? What historical systems or events created those conditions? How does understanding the history deepen your perspective? Gender Norms What norms exist today? What historical events or movements created or challenged those norms? How have these expectations affected your life? Inventions How did an invention (light bulb, automobile, internet, etc.) change society? How has it shaped your daily life or opportunities? Hobbies, Music, or Cultural Interests What are the historical origins of this hobby or genre? How does its history connect to your identity or community? Specific Historical Events How did a major event (World War II, the Mexican Revolution, etc.) shape your familys story? Would your life be different if that event had not occurred?
