n Topic 4, you narrowed down a specific research problem. In Topic 5, you found and summarized three articles about that problem. Now you will take the next to combine those articles to show why your problem is important to study. By synthesizing multiple sources, you will discover what needs to be known in current knowledge, what conflicting findings need resolution, and what evidence exists that your problem affects real people in significant ways. The purpose of this assignment is to build a compelling case for why your research problem deserves scholarly attention and how existing research confirms there is still work to be done.
General Requirements
Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
- Review the articles used to complete your Topic 5 assignment.
- Download “RES-815 Building Evidence for Your Research Problem” from the Topic Resources for this topic and use it to complete this assignment.

Directions
Write a paper (1,000-1,250 words) that synthesizes the three articles used for the Topic 5 assignment. Using the headings provided, include the following in your paper:
- Introduction: An introduction that provides an engaging opening statement. State your research problem from Topic 4. Tell the reader: “Current research reveals this problem is important because…” Then, preview the main reasons why this problem deserves study. Be sure to provide a thesis statement.
- Body: The body section of the essay should consist of 3-4 paragraphs, each building a case for why your problem matters. Each paragraph should focus on one aspect of justification, such as the scope of who this problem affects, needs for further study, limitations in current knowledge, conflicting findings that need resolution, or real-world consequences that may be experienced if this problem is not addressed. Make sure each paragraph contains a topic sentence. The paragraphs should be supported with evidence from the articles you chose for the Topic 5 assignment and have a transition sentence to the next paragraph.
- Conclusion: A conclusion that confirms your thesis statement and provides a brief summary of why the three sources together make a compelling case for studying the problem. State what specific aspects of the problem most need investigation. Identify what your research could contribute that current studies have not addressed.
- Reflection: Reflect on the process of synthesizing an argument from research articles, and document your thoughts. Discuss the challenges that you encountered building a case for your study. How did synthesizing these articles strengthen your conviction that this problem needs study? What specific new knowledge could your future research address? How might your faith perspective shape your approach to solving this problem? What did you learn about how to organize an argument? What has surprised you? What new perspectives will you carry forward?
