The Beatles and the Avant Garde influence

We review the Beatles song “Tomorrow Never Knows” as an example of the Beatles’ experimentation relative to Avant Garde music influences. Listen to Karl Stockhausen’s composition “Gesang Der Junglinge” and the Beatles song. What are your impressions of these Avant Garde studio techniques in Stockhausen’s piece? What do you think of these techniques within “Tomorrow Never Knows”?

(Karlheinz Stockhausen “Gesang Der Junglinge”)

(The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows”)

Example 1

Listening to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Gesang Der Junglinge was very interesting and kind of eerie. I was listening with my headphones, and it would be quiet, then a loud noise or a boy singing would come through one side of the headphones, and it made me jump a couple of times. This song features many unearthly and experimental sounds.

The Beatles’ Tomorrow Never Knows has a lot of the same elements as Gesang Der Junglinge. But it has more of a rock-and-roll component. They are singing throughout the song, so it is not so eerie, and the sounds dont just sneak up on you suddenly. I liked the Avant Garde influence in this song.

Example 2

when I listened to Gesang der Junglinge by Karlheinz Stockhausen it felt super experimental and kind of chaotic, like its more about strange sounds and voice effects than an actual melody. Its cool but definitely not something youd casually play. Then in Tomorrow Never Knows, you can hear those same avant garde ideas with the tape loops and trippy effects, but the Beatles made it way more structured and catchy. It still sounds experimental, just way more listenable.

Example 3

The Karlheinz Stockhausen composition of Gesang Der Junglinge has a eerie vibe that sends chills through. Listening on head phones, the sounds come from different places and a little disorienting. It makes me feel like I am falling into madness. Listening to Tomorrow Never Knows by the Beatles, I hear the techniques in the song. They use the same sounds used in Gesang Der Junglinge. Their own instrumentation and vocals are layered with the sounds from the previous song. It creates a balance of from the eerie sounds paired with the pop sound of the Beatles. It gives the song a unique overall sound.
