Subjective Objective Approach

The finished paper (excluding the student response) will be a minimum of one full page (single-spaced, size 12 font) in length (approximately 500 words) and posted on the Canvas course site.

The final aspect to the course will consist of a written assignment that is both Subjective and Objective in Approach (S.O.A.). The following instructions for the written assignment paper are designed to maximize your learning by having the student apply theory and concepts that you are currently studying.

This written assignment (approximately six to seven pages in length) will contain (3) sections of

approximately (2) pages in length (and shall be labeled as such):

(1) Subjective: describing your relationship to the social problem (what was / is your

experience with the social problem?). Be sure to describe, in detail, your experience of

the social problem from a subjective approach. Note that no identifying markers of

subjects involved shall be presented (names, addresses, etc.) when describing the social

problem.

(2) Objective: researching the social problem topic that you have chosen. The student

must cite a minimum of two different (excluding the Henslin textbook) academic

articles or publications (references may include the Henslin textbook. All references must

be listed on a References page. APA style of writing isencouraged, but any standard

form is acceptable.

(3) Approach: analyzing (or approaching) the Subjective via the Objective. The final two

pages will consist of applying theory and / or concepts to your experience of the social

problem. It is essential that you apply the various theories / concepts presented in the

course. In short, do theories / concepts help to explain the social problem / deviant

activity that you have experienced. If so, in what way(s)? If not, in what way(s)?

Topic: the (S.O.A.) paper topic must be a social problem, keeping in mind that the student

must have personal (subjective) experience with the social problem being approached (e.g.

drug use, theft, academic dishonesty, pornography, incarceration, prostitution, racism,

alcoholism, ageism).

Due Date Sunday, March 8, 2026 – midnight.

The (S.O.A.) assignment should be submitted to Turnitin (Drop box) under the Modules tab

as an attachment.

Grading: The Subjective-Objective Approach assignment (S.O.A.) will be graded on the

following rubric:

1. subjective presentation (description of social problem)

2. objective presentation (research of social problem)

3. approach presentation (utilization of sociological terminology / theory)

4. appropriateness of references

5. number of references

6. length of (2 pages minimum per section / overall: 6 7 double-spaced pages)

7. writing of (grammar, syntax, spelling, etc.)

A total of (200) possible points may be attributed to the S.O.A. paper requirement.
