Let’s Be Open and Talk About Gun Violence-What are your thoughts, fears and ideas?

We just experienced another horrific shooting, this time not at a school but followed nearly immediately by threats of more violence at schools and churches.

Each time we hear about another school shooting the same words are spoken by everyone, but nothing really seems to change.

  • Part of the issue is guns are part of our American culture and there is a great divide between the ideas people have related to guns.
  • Part of the issue is the lack of mental health issue identification. We are not good at identifying people with mental health issues in time before they take this kind of terrible action.
  • Part of the issue is a lack of mental health resources available in our communities.
  • Part of the issue is social media that can change the mindset of vulnerable individuals.
  • Part of the problem is it is hard to talk about school shootings and active shooter incidents at other sites.

As teachers or future educators, school shootings should be something we talk about, prepare for and practice the procedures.

1)As a teacher or future teacher, have you been part of an active shooter drill at your school? If so, tell us what happened

and explain the procedures. How did the drill make you feel?

  1. I hope this is not the case, but have you or anyone close to you been in a real active shooter situation? It is becoming more common to meet people who have. Tell us what happened and how you have delt with the emotions during and afterwards and how it has affected you and changed the way you go about your life.
  1. What are some of your fears and questions about being present with a class of children during an active shooter incident?
  1. It is important to think ahead about how you will help a group of young children in the case of an actual school shooting. Young children are vulnerable and easily frightened. If will be important for the adults in the room to keep their wits about them for the sake of the children.

5.For those of you who have practiced active shooter drills, tell us how you have helped to calm the children during the drill. How did you explain what was happening to them in advance. Keep in mind we do not need to tell young children horrific stories about past incidents, but be a supportive and caring presence for them.
