One of the aims of this course is for students to develop their research paper writing
skills.
It is recommended that you pick a paper topic early in the course, develop a
bibliography, and read the materials in it.
This will enable you to decide which
sociologists and scholars
you agree with and where you want your paper to say about
the academic literature.
It is recommended that you choose a narrow argument that you can effectively prove in
2,
500 words. The biggest mistake students make on papers is trying to argue t
oo
widely.
Pick a narrow argument and then argue for it effectively
.
At least 15 sources are required in your
reference section
. At least ten of them must be
scholarly (with their own citations
and bibliography)
. Course texts are acceptable
scholarly sources, and it is recommended that you use the class text in your paper to
demonstrate you have learned the material in the course.
You can write on any of the topics that we cover in the
weekly readings
, but Id suggest
narrowing your topic even further:
Globalization and inequality since the 1980s
Education and
socialization in Canada
The role of gender
in social inequality
in Canada
The rights of LGBTQ2 persons in a specific society and how they are socially
constructed
The role of race and ethnicity in social inequality in Canada
Colonialism in international development.

in a specific society

in a specific society
Climate activism in
a specific society

a particular society
.
Other topics you discuss with me.
If you have an idea that is not on the list, feel free to email me about it or meet me.
The assignment is to write a paper that is
2
500 words double spaced (including citations
and bibliography but not including the abstract). 5% grace either way is allowable.
Please put your word count on the bottom of the final page and place a 150
–
word
abstract on the cover page.
The paper should have a clear beginning, middle and end. The beginning should
present what you will argue with a clear statement that
in this paper I will argue.
The introduction should frame up your argument and set out the key sources you will be
drawing on. The middle should present research that supports your main thesis, while
dealing with evidence to the contrary. The best research shows how complex issues
a
re. The conclusion should sum up and state clearly what you have argued and shown.
Dont waste words on a literature review or methodology section in your paper. Its not a
good use of your
2
,500 words. Methodology sections are more appropriate for primary
research
,
and your paper is a work of secondary research.
Please use the American Sociological Association system of citation. Details can be
found here.
