“Prisons are supposed to keep people safe and punish those who break the law, but many prisons in the United States have serious problems that make people question if they are fair or humane. In a lot of facilities, prisoners deal with extreme heat, overcrowding, and poor medical care, which has started a big debate about how prisons should really be run. Some people believe prison is meant to be hard and uncomfortable because it is a punishment, while others argue that prisoners are still human and should be treated with basic dignity and safe living conditions. Reports show these problems are real. For example, one news report explains that dangerous heat inside some prisons has led to illness and deaths among inmates (McCullough). People who support prison reform say this proves changes are needed, but others think improving prisons would cost too much and be too easy on criminals. Prison conditions should be improved because no matter what someone did, prisons should still be safe, humane places that respect basic human rights”
