Essay 2 (Analysis & Argument) (1750-2250) ENC 1101 Objective: Write a well-developed essaydouble-spaced with your name, date, and section in top left cornerthat addresses one of the following topics: Option 1: Choose two or three versions of a story, preferably from different media, and write a well-organized essay comparing them and asserting a value judgment about them, e.g., which is more effective? Why? (Example: Johnny Depp is a better Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder because the former is creepier and truer to the original book.) Option 2: This paper will analyze the effects on American culture of some kind of media addressed to the general publicadvertising, television, radio, magazines, film, etc. You might choose some popular celebrity or television show and consider why that person or show appeals to people. (Example: Why is Taylor Swift such an influence on American culture?) Or you can explore how a particular form of public media reinforces stereotypes or American myths. (Example: According to hip hop music, what does it mean to be a success?) This paper may include both print and non-print sources. Option 3: This option is for those feeling especially creative or who like practical application of knowledge. In this option you will actually create a public service announcement, either print or short video (think newspaper/billboard or TV commercial) for an issue of your choosing. Target your ad toward your classmates. The style and content is entirely up to you, but it may not be overtly vulgar or offensive. Once you have designed your ad, you must write up 1500-2000 words describing in detail why you chose each element of your piece. That is, tell me why you chose to have the fuscia background, the orange-spotted dinosaur, and the monkey in the top hat represent your new anti-smoking campaign. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how you analyze visual texts; in order to compose an effective advertisement, you must first understand how advertisements work. To this end, your outside sources will most likely include references to advertising techniques or examples of similar real-world advertisements. You will be judged primarily on how the elements work together, rather than on your artistic ability or your ability to use PhotoshopTM and CanvaTM, but remember that visual impressions are important. Writing Tasks: As you outline and draft your essay, keep the following in mind: Begin with a thesis statement that is a direct response to the topic. Assume that your reader may need refreshing about the subject matter of each essay. Remember that a thesis has to be debatable. You cant just say X and Y have similarities and differences. Thats a fact, not a thesis. One of your reasons may not be I like X because I havent seen/read/heard Y. Regardless of which option you choose, you MUST include a Works Cited page that includes at least three outside sources. (Remember that the source texts/images count as sources.)
