Instructions: Students are invited to submit an approximately 2000-word research paper that asserts an argumentative thesis statement in response to an empirical research question in Canadian political science. Submissions should include engagement with at least 5 scholarly sources.

Argumentation: The goal is to provide a clear and concise response to one of the chosen research questions posted below, backed by rational consideration of available evidence. This exercise is designed to help develop research and writing skills that requires consulting the scientific literature to support an argument. A counterargument and/or limitation to the thesis statement should be considered. At least one of the scholarly sources cited should be used to explain the counterargument.

Essay Format & Citations: Include a substantive title and a complete bibliography/works cited page. The Works Cited page should include a complete list of all resources that were used to develop the essay. All pages should be numbered. Chicago Author-Date Citation (with page numbers) style is preferred. Regardless of the selected citation format, submissions must include page numbers for in-text citations, i.e., (Cairns, 1971: 302). Use numbered paragraphs for online documents that do not have page numbers.

Topic: How have social media platforms and digital communication reshaped political participation, grassroots mobilization, or public trust in democratic institutions in Canada? Use empirical evidence to support your analysis. Students may focus on a specific platform, issue, or time period.

Strictly follow this Structure:

  • Introduction: 200 words max
  • Conceptual definitions: 400 words
  • Argument 1: 300 words
  • Argument 2: 300 words
  • Argument 3: 300 words
  • Limits / counterarguments: 250 words
  • Conclusion: 250 words
  • Total: about 2000 words, with 10%
