This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- CO 1: Examine the role of research and evidence from nursing and related fields in advancing healthcare outcomes and equity. (POs 4, 5)
- CO 4: Apply evidence-based models to enhance advanced nursing practice. (POs 4, 5)
- CO 5: Develop professional competencies in scientific inquiry and translating scholarship into practice. (POs 4, 5)
Preparing the Discussion
Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the discussion. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.
General Instructions
Use the practice problem identified in the Week 1 discussion and include the sections below. Select a practice change that is client-focused, specific, measurable, and related to your future role in advanced nursing practice. Nurse practitioner students must choose a practice change that impacts client care directly and avoid topics related to changes in public policy or law, such as full-practice authority.
Include the following sections: Chronic Pain is the TOPIC
- Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
- Summarize your practice problem in 2-3 sentences.
- Describe the evidence-based intervention you plan to implement to address the identified problem.
- Write your practice question in standard PICOT format: In ________(Population), what is the effect of _________(Intervention) in comparison to _________ (Comparison) on _____________ (Outcome) to be completed over __________ (Time).
- Identify components of your PICOT question where peer input would help refine those elements.
- Integration of Evidence: Integrate relevant scholarly sources as defined
- Cite a scholarly source in the initial post.
- Accurately analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles from evidence with no more than one short quote (15 words or less) for the week.
- Include a minimum of two different scholarly sources per week. Cite all references and provide references for all citations.
- Communicate using respectful, collegial language and terminology appropriate to advanced nursing practice.
- Professionalism in Communication: Communicate with minimal errors in English grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation.

Formatting Practice Questions: PICOT Framework
Once a practice question is identified, the population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (PICOT) framework is used to support the search for the best available evidence to answer the question. The PICOT framework provides a standardized format for formulating a practice question, as seen below.
In _____ (P), how does _____ (I) compared to _____ (C) affect _____ (O) within _____ (T)?
Additional examples of PICOT framework sentences may be found in Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2023), Table 2.2.
Each component of a PICOT question is patient-focused and measurable. Click each plus (+) sign in the activity below to learn more about each PICOT component.
P: Population
- Defines the Person, Population, or Problem succinctly; includes characteristics to limit population such as age, gender, ethnicity, diagnosis, or symptoms. Who is the client, and what is the problem?
I: Intervention
- Identifies an Intervention or treatment. What treatment change, educational offering, or observation would help address the client’s problem?
C: Comparison
- Offers a Comparison to the selected intervention. Is there a standard or alternative intervention? Not all practice questions will have a comparison group or comparison intervention.
O: Outcome
- Identifies measurable Outcomes. What does the intervention hope to accomplish, improve, or affect? What is the clients ideal state?
T: Time
- Specifies the Timeframe for investigating influence and impact upon identified outcomes. Not all practice questions will have a specified timeframe.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While a timeframe is not always necessary, you are required to have one for your practice question.
