One competency area in which I believe I excel is inter-professional collaboration in practice, as my roles as a unit secretary and in the nursing field, allow me to effectively improve these skills every day and become confident in utilizing these skills to provide safe and effective patient care. One area that I have the opportunity to grow in is leadership, as this will allow me to advocate more effectively for patients and staff members and contribute to the overall healthcare system.
One competency that I feel I excel in from the eight competencies listed in the AACNs ten domains would be compassionate care for my patients. I excel in this competency because I always try to provide the kind of care that I would want my family or I to receive. I have seen many nurses who perform their job very well, but lack empathy and compassion in their practice. One competency that I feel I could develop in growth opportunities would be engaging in health policy decision-making. I have never had the experience or opportunity to participate in health policy changes within my nursing practice. I think becoming an advanced practice nurse will empower me to speak up more confidently to help improve my patients outcomes and advocating for change due to many disparities that are present in todays society
