My initial response:
The final results of the Self-Care Inventory amounted to 59 out of 144, which was both sobering and eye-opening. My scores were as follows: Emotional 16/24, Workplace/Academic 15/24, Spiritual 7/24, Physical 8/24, Relationship 8/24, and Psychological 5/24. The most surprising result was my psychological self-care score of only 5 out of 24. I scored zero in several areas, including psychotherapy, doing things outside my expertise, engaging my intelligence creatively, and saying no to extra responsibilities, which revealed a significant neglect of my mental and cognitive well-being.
My strongest areas were emotional self-care at 16/24 and workplace self-care at 15/24. I truly like myself, like spending time with others, and feel involved and satisfied with my studies. However, physical, relationship, and especially psychological self-care need urgent and deliberate attention. I do not take screen breaks, I do not seek therapy, and I always overcommit myself without setting limits.
To enhance my psychological self-care, I will initially want to train myself to say no to at least one non-essential obligation per week, slowly guarding my time and mental strength. The second objective that I set is to take part in one new activity that is intellectually stimulating every month, which may include visiting a museum or reading out of my area of specialization. Strengthening psychological self-care will make me a more balanced and resilient nurse, reducing the risk of burnout and enabling me to think clearly, make sound clinical decisions, and provide

I dont think anything necessarily surprised me. I feel like, especially in an accelerated nursing program, theres a lot that unfortunately gets put on the back burner. While I am trying to maintain myself, it’s rough.
What areas are you successfully caring for yourself? What areas could use improvement?
The areas where Im successfully caring for myself are emotional and workplace/academic self-care. This isnt much of a surprise to me, as a large part of what I can control is my emotions. Sure, I still end up in places where I get stressed or overwhelmed, but I learn to manage these emotions to better myself and my outcomes. A big part of my life right now is school. After I took a break from my education due to COVID and my fear of not being able to continue it, work became a big part of who I was. In it, I learned the importance of making work a place where I can grow and thrive with others.
As my scores reflect, I have a lot of room for improvement in my self-care. A lot of it is just situational, but I hope to do what I can.
Provide two goals or strategies for improving your lowest scoring area. How will improving this area promote your ability to care for others as a nurse?
One goal I have for myself is to let others do things for me and to ask for help when I need it. I must recognize that others around me truly have the best intentions and that I can rely on them when I am in need. For my other goal, I must try to exercise and eat to maintain myself. For that, I should make it a goal to do some physical activity and then have a meal that supports it.
Improving these areas will enhance my ability to care for others as a nurse, as I can rely on my coworkers to ensure care is delivered adequately. I can also be an advocate for my patients’ physical health, emphasizing its importance and sharing my own experience.
Peer2:After completing the Self-Care Inventory, I realized that I do an okay job taking care of myself in some areas, but there are definitely areas that need improvement. One thing that surprised me was how low my score was in physical self-care. I usually feel like I am doing enough, but the inventory made me realize that I dont always prioritize sleep, exercise, or healthy meals, especially when school gets busy. As a nursing student, it is easy to focus so much on studying and responsibilities that I forget to take care of my own needs. One area where I think I am doing well is social self-care. I make time to talk with friends and family, and having that support system helps me manage stress. Spending time with people I care about helps me relax and take a break from school work. However, my physical self-care is an area that could definitely improve. Two goals I have for improving my physical self-care are creating a better sleep routine and making time for exercise during the week. Even something simple like going for a walk or doing a short workout a few times a week could help me feel more energized. I also want to plan my time better so Im not staying up late finishing assignments. Improving my self-care will help me be a better nurse because when I take care of my own health, I will have more energy, patience, and focus to care for my patients.
