Reflective Critical Analysis
Here are clear instructions for the reflective analysis:
1. Purpose
> Write a reflective analysis that demonstrates your professional growth from RPN to BScN/RN, using placement and work experiences to show development toward entry-to-practice competencies.
2. Experiences to include
>Clinical placements: PACU and biologic infusion clinic & Professional Practice.
>Professional work: Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) experience in the Emergency Department.
>Academic/professional activities: designing a vascular skills day for nursing staff using current evidence and writing an evidencebased policy for nursing practice – TPN.
3. Focus/theme
>Choose a central nursing concept (suggested: connection or caring theory) or another professional aspect (professionalism, collaborative practice, communication, or evidencebased practice).
>Use that concept as the lens to interpret and integrate the listed experiences.
4. Reflection tasks
> Describe specific incidents or activities from each setting (PACU, infusion clinic, ED, skills day, policy writing) that illustrate challenges, decisions, and outcomes.
>Analyze how these experiences influenced your thinking, values, and practice related to the chosen concept.
>Identify skills and behaviours you developed (clinical judgment, communication, leadership, teaching, policy literacy, teamwork, ethical reasoning).
> Explain how these changes show progression toward the BScN RN role.
5. Theory and evidence
>Integrate one relevant nursing theory (e.g., caring/connection theory) and connect theory to concrete examples.
>Use at least 23 contemporary, evidencebased sources to support claims about practice, teaching, or policy decisions (cite in-text and list references).
6. Competency mapping
>Explicitly map your reflections to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) entrytopractice competencies: identify which competencies were demonstrated, developed, or require further growth; give specific examples from your experiences for each mapped competency.
7. Structure and length
>Suggested structure: Introduction (theme + overview), Narrative descriptions (by setting/activity), Theoretical and evidence integration, Competency mapping, Personal development plan (strengths, gaps, actions), Conclusion.
> Length: 1,2001,800 words (or specify your preferred word count).
8. Tone and style
>Reflective, analytical, evidencebased, and professional.
> Use first person for reflection but maintain academic rigor.
9. Learning plan
Conclude with 35 SMART learning objectives for continued transition to RN practice, linked to CNO competencies and grounded in the reflections.
10. Referencing and formatting
Use APA (or your programs required style) for references.
Include in-text citations for theory and evidence sources and a reference list.
