Identifying Mixed Methods and Triangulation in Public Health Evaluation and Research
As you’ll know after watching the flipped lecture for this week, mixed methods are commonly used in public health evaluations to provide both measureable outcomes (quant eval) and deeper contextual understanding (qual eval). This short assignment will give you an opportunity to explore how mixed methods have been applied in research / evaluation studies related to your own topic or outcome of interest.
Objective: Identify and analyze how mixed methods are used in a public health or evaluation study, paying attention to outcomes and triangulation.
Instructions: Submit a Google doc link with the following information.
Part 1: Find, link and cite one peer-reviewed research or evaluation article that uses a mixed methods design.
My program and outcomes: Name of the Program is Mindful Migration. Mindful Migration aims to reduce anxiety among African immigrant women in the United States. One of the outcomes are increased awareness regarding mental health struggles.
The topic should relate to your program or outcome (e.g., substance use, mental health, maternal mortality)
- The article must clearly invlude both quantitative and qualitative methods.
Part 2: In 4-8 sentences (1-2 short paragraphs) answer the following:
- Summarize the purpose of the study (you can likely pull this information from the abstract)
- Identify the quant method used and the qual method used
- Describe the findings (quant and qual)
- Provide an opinion on whether you feel the mixed methods approach meaningfully strengthened the study’s conclusions or if the study / evaluation would have been better off only using a singular method
