Your Professional Practice Paper is an opportunity for you to synthesize and critically evaluate the literature on your selected practice problem in context of your learning over your program of studies.
n your paper, you are expected to:
- analyze a professional practice problem;
- review the literature to expand your own and others’ understanding of the problem;
- critique the literature on your selected problem;
- use relevant research findings to inform recommendations for professional practice;
- meet academic research and writing standards; and
- write to be understood.
Your paper should be 4000-5000 words (16-20 pages) in length and use the following structure:
- Title page
- Abstract max 250 words or 1 page
- Introduction about 300 words or 1.5 pages
- Problem Description and Analysis about 750-1000 words or 3-4 pages
- Literature Review (argument of discovery) about 1500-2000 words or 6-9 pages
- Discussion and Recommendations (argument of advocacy) – about 1000-1250 or about 4-5 pages
- Conclusion about 250 words or 1 page
- References
Please note: the problem description should be a condensed version of assignment 1. The literature review is a condensed version of assignment 2. There is no need to duplicate. However, do edit assignments 1 and 2 so that they contribute to the argument in your paper. In this regard, pay attention to emphasising why you approached the problem in the way you did and how it frames and leads to validating your conclusions. In the literature section, first the aim is to convince the reader you have surveyed the literature – but this should be short and concise. The remainder ot the literature section is either to explain why your research is important to the literature (i.e. you are adding to the literature) or that the literature validates your findings and thus reinforces the importance of your resarch. Lastly, think about the literature as part of an influence process – most of you are doing research that is action oriented so you are referring to the literature also to get the attention of people you want to influence. Ideally this means paying attention to the sort of policy or literature sources that decision makers in your respective field tend to refer to in justifying their decision making and resource allocations.
