Principles of IDEA and Special Education Law MMS 560

As a special educator, you are responsible for implementing all principles of IDEA. As you work with different stakeholders in the special education process you may need to present this information to ensure everyone can uphold IDEA. It is important to help stakeholders understand their specific role in the process.

Part 1: Six Principles of IDEA

Create a 10-12 slide digital presentation for the IEP team stakeholders that outlines the six principles of IDEA: Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), Appropriate Evaluation, Individualized Educational Program (IEP), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), Parent and Student Participation in Decision Making, and Procedural Safeguards. For each component include the following:

  • Title of the principle.
  • Description of the principle in family-friendly language.
  • Court case involving the principle and a description of the importance of the case.
  • Responsibilities for stakeholders within the principle.
  • Two acronyms that are related to that specific principle of IDEA. Provide the definition and how each is related to the principle. Use each acronym only once.
  • At least one resource for the IEP team stakeholders to research additional information. Include the link to the resource.

Part 2: Special Education Law and Professional Practice Reflection

Additionally, in 250-500 words:

  • Summarize the changes in special education from before IDEA to the present. Emphasize the two key special education laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Explain how each law has influenced the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the educational setting.
  • Reflect upon how knowledge of special education history and law will help you apply ethical guidelines and legal policies and procedures when making decisions and determining eligibility in your future professional practice. Cite evidence from the Special Education Professional Ethical Principles to support your stance.
  • Discuss the importance of understanding special education history and law when advocating for students and the profession. Include reference to at least one court case that emphasizes advocacy and the professional principles involved with special education.
