Parenting style: authoritarian vs permissive

UNIT 2: RECOMMENDED TOPICS

  • Parenting Style: Authoritarian vs. Permissive

Authoritarian parenting is known as Tiger parenting in some cultures: punitive, unyielding, demanding and sometimes even demeaning. Familial roles are tied to cultural perspectives with tiger parents demanding strict adherence to rules and expectations of their children. This style often yields high levels of success in academic, extracurricular, and future professional performances. Permissive parenting is considered Panda parenting in some cultures: soft, cooperative, supportive, and unstructured. Panda parents provide encouragement of childrens interests and offer freedom of choice without judgement, often yielding highly creative, intrinsically motivated children. Each approach has benefits and detriments which are largely influenced by cultural context. Explore each of these perspectives within cultural context and share evidence supporting the pros and cons of each.

Title Page, Abstract, and Annotated Bibliography

This assignment is the building block for the in-class panel discussion and future evidence-based writing assignments. The following components are included:

  1. Title Page: APA formatted with page number and byline (page 1)
  2. Abstract: begin with a specific thesis statement of topic/position, support it with facts derived from valid empirical sources. The abstract is written in a third-person, objective voice. The abstract does not specifically refer to authors, articles, or statistics and studies; nor should it include any citations. It is brief – no more than 250 words. Write the abstract after annotations are written (page 2)
  3. Annotated reference list (bibliography): No fewer than 5 scholarly references from the Bankier Library databases. These sources must be original research articles in which a study has been conducted and evidence (support for the researchers hypothesis) gathered. (pages 3 -6). Focus on studies that support your topic. Studies that present evidence of opposing views of the topic are encouraged, however if students choose a perspective, they must provide MORE evidence to support their stance.
  • For each entry, include author’s name(s), year of publication, all publication information, and hyperlink to the full text article. After the reference, provide several paraphrased sentences summarizing the study. Use your own words to explain the following information and focus on the big questions:
  • Where was this study done – country/culture – is there relevance to that?
  • What were the authors’ hypotheses/research questions? What background might be helpful in understanding why the researchers are studying this phenomena?
  • Who were the participants and how many were there? What characteristics are relevant?
  • How were participants’ studied – how was data collected? What did participants have to do?
  • What kind of data or information was collected and analyzed?
  • What were the outcomes? Did outcomes support or refute the researchers’ hypotheses?
  • What do the findings mean? How do they support the stance?
  • How might the research be meaningful or helpful to people?

All written work is produced in APA format. APA documents are double-spaced with one-inch page margins and a 10 to 12-point, standard font style. Follow all other APA guidelines for formatting and references.
