Unit 2 Case Study
A new respiratory virus, SVR-25, has erupted globally. It spreads rapidly with unpredictable mutations and disproportionately affects older adults and those with chronic conditions. As a BSN-prepared nurse leading a 32-bed intensive care unit (ICU) in a 250-bed community hospital, you are facing the following:
- An overwhelmed and full ICU, with other mechanically ventilated patients held in overflow units without negative air pressure rooms and with inexperienced nurses caring for them; the nursepatient ratio should be 1:2 at the most, and the ratio is currently 1:4
- Limited personal protective equipment (PPE) and changing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance
- Public protests over mask and vaccine mandates that make coming and going to work stressful; the public distrusts health care providers, and providers distrust hospital leadership
- Nurses questioning leadership decisions regarding inconsistent evidence that is guiding policy, and nurses facing emotional burnout
- Disinformation spreading through social media
You are tasked with contributing to evidence-based policy recommendations at the hospital level, supporting your team with providing safe quality care to all patients and engaging in ethical, informed public communication as part of your professional role. There is unclear guidance related to CDC policy regarding masking. You are concerned that the SVR-25 virus will be a repeat of the COVID-19 pandemic and are committed to your staff being informed with the best evidence, but credible evidence is scarce.

- Begin by restating the case study in full, using your own words to demonstrate comprehension and contextual understanding (as if you personally experienced the situation).
