The Cure presents a lighthearted remedy for obesity, but the truth about this national health problem is much more complex. Because we often attach behavioral judgments to our ideas about obesity, presuming that overweight people simply need to exercise more or eat less, the issues true complexity is often obscured. Its too easy to make a moral or character judgment against the obese person; we may do so without accounting for genetic, biological, medical, or even industrial causes.

Given that our society eats highly processed foods, more aptly called “food-like products” by investigative journalist Michael Pollan, and that these “food-like products” are proven to contribute to weight gain, to what extent do you think obesity is a social or corporate (rather than solely a personal) responsibility?

n Hebel’s time corporations did not exist; all foods were “whole foods.” His protagonist is repeatedly described as a “rich man” in a time when fat was often seen as a status symbol–one that poor people could never attain. Today, obesity knows no socio-economic bounds. BUT low-income populations have a MUCH higher obesity rate than their wealthy counterparts. Why? Share your thoughts about the possible solutions for this national challenge.
