Scenario

You are a new public health nurse working for the Department of Public Health, and you have been asked to create a report on one of the following vulnerable populations in your community: those experiencing elder abuse or intimate partner violence, similar to the examples illustrated in the Virtual Experience: Promise Heights Shelter. The report will provide your department with current information about your community and offer interventions for the selected vulnerable population within your community.

Objectives

  • Summarize the health determinants of vulnerable populations.
  • Assess how social determinants affect the health of vulnerable populations.
  • Develop multidimensional strategies of care for public health interventions for vulnerable populations.
  • Examine the potential impacts of multidimensional strategies on vulnerable populations.

Instructions

Connection to the Virtual ExperienceIntimate Partner Violence and Elder Abuse: Promise Heights Shelter

Part One Vulnerable Population

  • Identify and describe the vulnerable population selected, including statistics related to this population nationally and in your own community
  • Describe the health determinants that affect the selected vulnerable population as seen in the Virtual Experience, including:
  • Social and economic environment
  • Physical environment
  • Individual characteristics
  • Behaviors

Part Two Public Health Nurse & Multidimensional Strategies

  • Describe the role of the public health nurse in helping the selected vulnerable population.
  • Develop two multidimensional strategies that could be used as interventions for the selected vulnerable population (not individuals) illustrated in the Virtual Experience.
  • To be considered multidimensional, a strategy should address two or more of the following personal factors predictive of health behaviors:
  • Biological (age, gender, body mass index, aerobic capacity, strengths, agility, or balance, for example)
  • Psychological (self-esteem, self-motivation, personal competence, perceived health status, and definition of health, for example)
  • Socio-cultural (race, ethnicity, culture, education, and socioeconomic status, for example)
  • Include the potential impacts of the two multidimensional strategies on the vulnerable population.

Provide stated ideas with professional language and attribution for credible sources with correct APA citation, spelling, and grammar in the report.
