Media & Sexuality Discussion
Initial post due Friday 11:59 pm | Three reply posts due Sunday 11:59 pm
Purpose
This discussion allows you to examine how mass media reflects and influences sexual norms.
Instructions
Do a deep read and critically analyze any media of your choice that pertains to human sexuality. I encourage you to be creative with the media example you choose and go beyond the textbook’s and PowerPoint’s scope. Your example can convey positive messages, negative messages, or both. Let’s be honest; you have a lot of media examples to choose from.
You CANNOT pick an example in the textbook or PowerPoint Chapter 1- Perspectives on Sexuality. Ensure you include an image of the media example you analyze in your post. This includes if you decide to analyze a show, movie, or social media. Including a photo is vital for your classmates to understand your analysis better.
You will lose points if:
You pick any of the same media examples I used in the textbook or my PowerPoint.
You do not include an image of your media example.
This Media & Sexuality Discussion topic is due Friday before 11:59 pm (to do so, click the “reply” button below). In your post, please include the following:
What are some overt (obvious) messages depicted in your media example? (one paragraph minimum)
What are some covert (subtle) messages depicted in your media example? (one paragraph minimum)
How does your media example reflect and influence sexual norms? (one paragraph minimum)
For example, if you choose a TV series, deeply analyze one aspect of the show or a specific character. Think about: How do the female characters differ from the males? Are most of the females hyper-sexualized in the series? How? Why? If you want to analyze a specific character in a TV series, evaluate what the character looks like, their personality, and how they interact with other characters. Make sure to focus on how characters are sexualized.
