Article Critique Written Assignment

Overview

  • You will be asked to complete three written article critiques for this course. Each article critique will push you to evaluate the application of a primary theory in practice. You will identify a published paper in a peer-reviewed journal that examines the application of a primary theory and evaluate its use of theory using the instructions below
  • A list of papers will be posted for your first critique on the HBM. You will be responsible for finding papers for future critiques.
  • You MUST upload a copy of the paper you use for Critiques’ 2 and 3 in addition to your written critiques.
  • For this first article critique, you will complete this individually. (The second and third article critiques will be completed in predetermined groups of 3 or as determined by the instructor. More information on group assignments will be shared via course announcements.)

Instructions

  1. You will choose one of two articles posted in D2L for your HBM article critique.
  2. As instructed for TRA/TPB, TTM, and SCT, identify an article with the assigned theory in the title and/or abstract.
  3. Acceptable articles are those that include data collected and analyzed that are related to the constructs of the theory or model, or articles that include a presentation of how theoretical constructs were used to plan a specific intervention. NOTE: reviews, commentaries, theoretical papers, and grey literature publications are UNACCEPTABLE articles to critique in this course.
  4. UPLOAD this article in addition to your paper.
  5. Write a four-page double-spaced paper.
  6. Concisely present the following using subheadings to separate sections:
  7. Purpose of the article objective, study questions, or hypothesis
  8. Methods used to conduct the study. Also be sure to identify and describe the conceptual definitions of the variables or constructs and describe the operational definitions of the variables or constructs
  9. Major findings
  10. Implications and interpretations
  11. Evaluate the effectiveness of the theory application
  12. Purpose/Objectives:
  13. Please state the purpose, objectives, and hypothesis, in your own words. Sometimes it is necessary to paraphrase or list the objective slash hypothesis. If this is necessary, please make sure it is correctly cited (including the page number).
  14. Methods:
  15. Describe the study sample: include number of participants, as well as the demographics mean age, % race/ ethnicity, mean education level, or other important information about the population.
  16. Study design: what design was used? (cross sectional, retrospective, etc.)
  17. Explain recruitment: where were the participants recruited? How were they recruited?
  18. How were the data collected? Describe the instruments used (interviews, surveys, diaries etc.) How many items were used, how long was the instrument, was reliability checked, etc.?
  19. What are the independent and dependent variables?
  20. Briefly explain the data analysis: what data techniques were used (means, regression, ANOVA, etc.)? What statistical programs were used (SPSS, SAS, STATA, etc.)?
  21. Construct Definition and Operationalization:
  22. What constructs are used in the study?
  23. How do the authors define each constraint?
  24. How is each construct operationalized? How is are they defined?
  25. How do the authors measure the construct? What items do they use in the instrument to measure the construct?
  26. How are the items scored?
  27. Putting all this information into a table is an acceptable way to present this information. A table can be easier to understand, as well as easier to use when discussing major findings or evaluating the theory application.
  28. Major Findings:
  29. Present, in your own words, what are the major findings as they relate to the constructs and outcomes.
  30. Discuss what the authors found out about the constructs and their relation to the outcome or study purpose.
  31. Interpretations/ Implications:
  32. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
  33. What do the findings tell us about future research that needs to be done?
  34. What do the findings tell us about the types of interventions that should be designed?
  35. Evaluate Theory Application:
  36. This is space to provide your opinion about the study, and how the authors use the theory. If there are other issues you would like to address, please feel free to include them as well.
  37. Some things to consider: how does your textbook discussion on the constructs compare to how the authors use the construct? Did the authors use all of the constructs? Do you think they them appropriately, or could they have done a better job with defining and operationalizing them? Were some of the constructs not used? If not did the authors say why they chose not to use them? Do you agree with their choice?
  38. General Comments:
  39. USE APA FORMATTING FOR ALL IN-TEXT CITATIONS AND FOR YOUR REFERENCES CITED PAGE.
  40. Provide the complete article reference at the top of your submission for easy reference. You must also provide appropriate in-text citations for the article, and the full citation for the reference must also be included in your references cited.
  41. Please note turning in a critique where most of the text is pulled out of the article will lead to a failing grade, even if you properly reference the material.
  42. Be clear and concise as possible; always try to state things in your own words.
  43. You can reference your textbook as needed, or additional peer-reviewed articles of any kind to justify components of your critique. These must be referenced appropriately.

FINALLY, THIS IS MEANT AS A REFERENCE AND SERVES AS A GUIDE. IT IS NOT A FINAL CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR ARTICLE CRITIQUE.
