ESSAY TOPIC

This essay covers the film and novel of Carol (also published as The Price of Salt) and the film and novel of A Single Man. You must discuss at least two of these four works, but you are welcome to discuss three or four of them. I mentioned in the class discussion that you would be required to discuss at least one novel and one film, but I have deleted that requirement. Now you are free to discuss the two films only or the two novels only if you choose.

You may choose if you want to focus in your essay on a thematic analysis regarding one or more of the topics and issues discussed in class that interest you, or you may choose if you want to focus on a formal analysis of these works, or you may want to combine the two approaches.

A thematic analysis of the films and novels might focus on any of the topics and issues that we listed on our class notes (available on Canvas under modules) or you might choose to focus on a theme or issue not listed there that particularly interests you in the works.

A formal analysis of the films might focus on such issues as color use, music use, editing choices or production design (among other things), while a formal analysis of the novel might focus on the relationship between narrator and reader, the use of language, the progression of the plot, character development, and the use of symbols (among other things).

You also might choose to focus your analysis upon the adaptation of the novel(s) into the film(s), considering left out and/or added scenes, changes in character and character emphasis, changes in plot, changes in setting, etc.

Whatever topic and approach you choose, be certain to quote from the novel(s) and/or to describe in detail scenes from the film(s) in making your analysis.
