Listening Journal Assignment Instructions
Overview
Analyze 2 pieces of music using the Listening Journal Analysis Questions document (included in the Listening Journal Resources section of the assignment page). You only need to answer one question per element of music for your analysis, but you need to include an analysis of all of the following elements: melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, form, and dynamics for each piece analyzed. Your two selected pieces for analysis should not be the same as those discussed and analyzed in a Directed Listening Guide in the course textbook. You can analyze a different piece by the same composerjust not the same piece.
Instructions
For example, consult the Listening Journal Exampledocument.
Your analysis of each piece of music must be at least 100 words (i.e., each Listening Journal Assignments word count will be between 250-300 words total, including source entry information for each musical piece).
All source entries should conform to Turabian style.
o Include one YouTube link source citation per song entry(i.e., minimum of two per LJ), in Turabian formatnot just a URL or hyperlink.
Acceptable sources: YouTube.com for song links. Research does not need to be done for this assignment about composers. You will be writing your analysis regarding the elements of music (melody, harmony, texture, timbre, rhythm, form, and dynamics) that stand out to you in each piece you discuss.
Submit each LJ as a Microsoft Word document
You only need to discuss a 5-minute portion of the musical selections you choose. Please designate the timestamp of the portion of the piece you choose to analyze.

Listening Journal: Songs of the Common Practice PeriodAssignment
Use Microsoft Copilot to generate music suggestions tailored to your preferences. To do this, youll write a search prompt that includes specific criteria. Copilot will help you find pieces that match your interests from the Common Practice Period. Include your Copilot prompt before your source citation, followed by your analysis of musical elements.
Example Copilot Prompts:
-Find a Romantic-era piano solo by a female composer in a minor key.
-Suggest a Classical-era string quartet in a major key by an Italian composer.
Search Criteria Options-Use at least three of the following criteria in your prompt to help Copilot refine your search:
Musical Era: Baroque (16001750), Classical (17501820), or Romantic (18201900)
Instrumentation: Solo piano, String quartet, Full orchestra, Voice and piano, Organ, Chamber ensemble, Flute solo, Woodwind quintet, etc.
Tonality: Major key, Minor key
Composer: Female composer, Male composer, Composer from a specific country (e.g., German, French, Russian), Lesser-known composer, Composer under age 30 at time of composition
Mood or Style: Dramatic, Peaceful, Melancholic, Joyful, Sacred, Dance-like, etc.
Form: Sonata Allegro form, Theme and variations, Fugue, Aria, Concerto movement
