Write a three-page informative essay (typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, ~750900 words) exploring some aspect of the history and culture of pre-Roman Italy.

You may choose to focus on historical events or a single group or region (e.g., the Samnites or the cities of Magna Graecia), or you may compare two or more peoples (e.g., the Etruscans and the Greeks of southern Italy). You may also want to discuss something altogether different, such as the languages of Ancient Italy, or the Etruscan roots of some of Roman mythology and religion. There are MANY possibilities. See list of ideas below. Your essay should include:

  • A clear thesis statement in the introduction
  • Historical background (integrated sources)
  • Discussion of any cultural, social, or political influence on early Roman society (integrated sources)
  • A conclusion reflecting on whatever has been discussed and its connection with Roman identity

Example Topic and Thesis:

While Rome was still a small village in a swampy area along the Tiber River, the cities of Etruria were thriving cultural centers, and the Etruscans were considered a regional power on the land and sea. Rome’s neighbors to the north of Latium, the Etruscans, were very influential during the city’s foundational years, and examples of Etruscan culture in Rome are evident in religion, architecture, government, and social customs.
