Interview a sports figure

The Interview

  • Choose someone to interview who is in someway affiliated with sport or a sports organization (e.g., coach, athlete, sports writer, someone who works for a sports organization, etc.). Plan ahead and work with them to schedule the interview.
  • Before the interview, craft interview questions around your interviewees role, You are encouraged to do some external research on how to craft interview questions. Keep in mind that the questions you asked should be framed around your interviewee’s role. Below are some examples of broad questions you may ask although they may not be relevant to your interviewee. You may need to tailor your questions accordingly and let me know if you have any questions.
    • How did they get involved in their role?
    • How long have they been practicing their role?
    • What are some key issues they have observed in their organization as it relates to the sport industry over time?
    • What changes would they like to see in their industry?
    • What are some opportunities or changes they see impacting sport over the next 10 years?
  • Complete the interview. During the interview, keep detailed notes and/or ask your interviewee if you may record your interview. If they agree, you may want to use to transcribe your interview so that you have a full transcript to refer back to.

The Critical Analysis Paper

  • Write a 3-4 page critical analysis paper about your interview. The paper should be divided into three sections: an introduction, body, and conclusion. In addition to the 3-4 pages, include a cover page, a reference page, and either (1) an appendix that includes your interview questions and interview notes, (2) or a separate documentwith your interview questions and interview notes.
    • Introduction: Provide an overview of the interviewee and their role in sport, how you connected with them, and what the major topics of conversation were during your interview.
    • Body: The bulk of the paper should focus on key or interesting interactions/happenings that you talked occurred during your interview. Select 2to 3 course concepts to apply to the conversation with your interviewee. As you apply your selected concepts, you should to accurately define and describe the concept and cite the textbook using APA formatting (in-text citation and reference page) in your paper. A recommend format to execute this is to describe the interaction, provide the definition of the concept you are applying, include an APA in-text citation, and provide an analysis of how your chosen concept may inform the interaction you observed.
    • Conclusion: Provide a summary of the course concepts you applied to the conversation with your interviewee. Include your own critical evaluation of how your knowledge of sport communication illuminated or provided you with a heightened understanding of the “findings” or interesting insights with your interviewee. Conclude your paper with 1 or 2 suggestions for how to expand future sports communication research based on what you learned from your conversation as supported by scholarly journal articles.
  • The critical analysis paper should be formatted using APA 7th edition formatting guidelines which includes a cover page, page numbers, and a reference page. You may include an appendix with your interview questions and notes or submit a separate document that includes these. You do not need an abstract.
  • Practice a collegiate writing style by using proper syntax, spelling, grammar, etc. Take time to revise your paper before submitting the final version.
