These are the directions:

You should begin by reading over all the walking material you’ve written so far in your journal–both your documentation of your walks, and your writing exercise results.

Identify a moment that you think warrants further exploration.

Perhaps it was a moment that triggered a question or idea in your mind that you want to pursue, or a memory that you want to revisit.

These are just potential optionsultimately its up to you to decide on the criteria for warrants further exploration.

you should aim to achieve a balance of external and internal detail in your narration.

Your reader should always have the sense of being in a specific material place with your narrator, not just inside their head.

Here is my journal that i chose and that i want to use as my baseline:

For my second walk, I decided to walk around a new and unfamiliar place called Little Italy, with a couple of my friends. I saw this place all over social media and many of my friends who live in New York say it’s a must see. From my last walk I was wearing headphones so I didnt hear really anything around me. This time I decided I wanted to walk and observe the area with not only my eyes but through my ears. As I left my dorm, and began walking to the subway, I heard a coffee shop playing one of my favorite songs and I had to stop and go in. As I walked in, I heard a bunch of familiar voices just to come and find that a group of my older friends were in there. I asked them how they found this place and they told me its a popular place all over social media and that they are known for playing a specific type of music. When they told me this I laughed out loud because the music playing was the reason why I even decided to walk in. Then I said bye to my friends and continued walking to the subway station that was down the street. Walking down into the station I could hear an abundance of voices and music once again. I then thought to myself today is my lucky day. I keep hearing music everywhere I go. In the station there was a man sitting in the corner playing the guitar and singing in an unfamiliar language that I wasnt familiar with. I enjoyed listening and observing the music while waiting for the subway. I then looked to my left and saw the subway coming ringing its loud bell to warn people of its arrival. I got on the subway and sat down until I had to get off at my stop which was in Manhattan. I always knew the subway had people from all backgrounds on it but I never really noticed it until now. I started to look around at what people were wearing and I realized that everyone is dressed in their own unique styles which I found so interesting. I found this interesting because at home, especially in California people all dress pretty much the same but when I arrived in New York and started observing peoples outfits, it made me realize how diverse and unique each individual is which I deeply love. Before my stop, a woman and her daughter walked in which caught my eye. The mom and her daughter were wearing matching light pink sweat sets with a long furry jacket and cute little beanies. I then arrived at my stop and started to walk over to Little Italy to meet up with my friends. When I got there I was shocked and felt as if I literally teleporated and walked into Italy. It was almost dark out, so all the bright lights were lit up around the area. Right away, this area felt and sounded different from any place in New York. It was different. It wasnt as loud or overwhelming like other places around the city. Little Italy felt secluded. It was a quiet area where the voices around were closer together, and sounded more soft. Another unique feature was that I realized the main language spoken by the people working in that area was Italian which I found so interesting. I felt connected with this area in a very personal and emotional way because my uncle was Italian and before he passed I was able to connect to his culture in different ways and we spoke a lot about the language. With that background, I was able to understand a little bit of what was being said around me. Something that immediately caught my eye when I walked into the area was the difference in infrastructure. In New York, especially in Manhattan, many of the buildings seem similar. But in Little Italy there was this one bright red building that immediately struck me when I saw it. Also before walking in, I looked up to find that there was a sign that was brightly lit that said Welcome to Little Italy which I found super cool. I walked around to see all the shops and restaurants there. Something that I also realized while walking around was that a lot of the people walking around were not from New York but were tourists visiting this well known area that is all over social media. After walking around and looking at a few shops, my friends and I decided to stop in quickly at this cool restaurant in the area. The restaurant was called Casa DAngelo. Immediately after walking into the restaurant I could smell the truffle and I knew I had to eat here. My friends and I agreed that we have to eat here after smelling the truffle pasta. Our waiter then came to the table and once he started talking and taking our orders down I could hear his strong Italian accent which I found so cool and refreshing. Back at home I dont really find myself encountering other accents as most of the people are from California. After lunch, I left the restaurant to begin my journey back to my dorm. As I was walking out I stopped and listened to this one italian song that sounded very familiar. I then began to listen more closely and realized it was the song my uncle always listened to before he passed. This made me emotional in the moment but it made me in a way feel like he was with me the whole time I walked around this area. It was the perfect ending to my 2nd walk.

These are my notes that had my idea:

Idea: headphones block out other people, noises (listened to music still, shared with others around me) it reminds me of an essay i read

Go through the world with headphones makes the walk more pleasant but instead makes me feel disconnected, isolated, aware of this now because of the experiences without the use of headphones

Look at phone, wanna be more observant

Makes me feel inspired to not wear headphones as much anymore

Name of coffee shop what i did while in there

Heard the city more, city is quite when there is a lot of snow on the ground

Music filled w music when walk was even when not feeding music in my ears
