2.0 Methodology of the literature review (1500 words)

2.1 Introduction to the literature review- Identify the literature review methodology

2.1 Search strategy- Key words and MESH terms, Inclusion and exclusion criteria,

databases, timescales for search. Ensure you justify the steps in your search and

provide references to support the decisions you have made

8 peer reviewed primary research articles (NB these should be quantitative and

qualitative and may include mixed methods studies)

2.2 Quality appraisal of articles- what tool did you use and why- Draft a meta-

analysis tables of your articles for inclusion as an appendix

2.3 Overview of findings of the research studies. (400 words)

How many qualitative, how many quantitative, why is this appropriate and what

research literature supports this. Overview of research methods- cluster studies

with similar methods together. What sampling methods were used and were the

sample sizes relevant for the methods. Data collection methods which studies

used which ones were they relevant did they used previously validated data

collection tools and why is this important? Data analysis methods- which studies

used which ones were they relevant for the study methods? Did they all have

ethical oversight / approval and why is this good practice?

2.4 Themes (2000 words)

You should be aiming for 3-4 themes. You may also present sub themes within a

theme. Present the themes that have arisen from your review, synthesising the

findings from the different studies within each theme. For each theme briefly

explain what the theme is about- defining key terms if required. When presenting

the findings of themes and if results are statistically significant present this with

the p< …. Etc

2.5 Discussion: (500 words)

the key findings of the research studies and relate these to the background

literature, policies/ guidelines.

2.6 Implications for practice, research and education that have arisen from your

review.

2.7 Strengths and limitations: (300 words)

Summarise the strengths and limitations of the studies and the review process.

2.8 Conclusion (200 words)

Summarise the main points of your analysis. Identify your learning from

undertaking the review and how this will influence your practice as a nurse
