Write an essay on one of the following questions. Your analysis should integrate material from the
assigned readings, class lectures, and documentaries. The essay must be 1,700 words in length
(minimum), paginated, and double-spaced. Make sure your name and the question number appear on
the first page. Be sure to include concrete information: dates, events, and names of people and places.
This essay does not require outside research. Insert references to the sources used in this course in the
text of your paper–for example: (Defronzo 20). However, if you do use sources other than those
assigned in this course, please use proper documentation (that is, footnotes or endnotes).
Remember: This is an exam, and the purpose of writing an exam is to demonstrate your
knowledge of the material covered in the lectures and assigned readings in this course. The primary
focus of your essay therefore should be the assigned readings, class lectures, and documentaries.
Material not assigned in this course are considered supplementary material only.
Finally, you should have no more than one indented quote of 5 lines maximum in this essay. Avoid
frequent use of quotations of terms and phrases. Instead, write in your own words.
1. Compare and contrast three theories of revolution covered in class and in the assigned
readings. In your opinion, how effective is each theory in explaining the causes of the
American and French revolutions? Explain.
