Fake news both misinformation (false or misleading information shared without harmful intent) and disinformation (deliberately deceptive information created to mislead)have shaped public opinion and influenced culture and current events throughout written human history. Now that you have a better understanding of independent research (Segment 2) and have been introduced to media literacy (Segment 3), your task is to write a 3-4 page case study discussing a specific instance of fake news.
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS & GUIDELINES
- SELECT YOUR FAKE NEWS EXAMPLE:

- Select an example of fake news that has had significant social, political, or economic consequences.
- Your example can come from any form of media (television, radio, print, or digital).
- Your example must be before 2020 (before the COVID-19 pandemic/infodemic). Why? Because it’s a Historical Case Study – we want to find an example from the past.
- It can be an instance of mis-, dis-, or mal information.
- ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE
- INTRO ( – 1 page):
- *In your own words*, summarize the example of fake news you selected to analyze.
- Provide background context and explain its significance
- Was it an example of mis-, dis-information or malinformation? Explain. (great opportunity to cite class material!)
- FAKE NEWS DESCRIPTION (1-1 pages):
- What is the main message of the fake news?
- Who created it (a private citizen? a corporation? a tech company? the government?) and what were the motivations behind it?
- How was it distributed? If in recent history, where did it catch traction (on social media, in the news cycle, etc) ?
- IMPACT & CONSEQUENCES (1-1 pages):
- Describe how the fake news affected individuals, institutions, or society at large.
- Did it lead to any policy changes, social unrest, financial gains/losses, or other notable consequences?
- Discuss any responses you can find from authorities, fact-checkers, or media outlets.
- CONCLUSION ( – 1 page):
- Summarize the key takeaways from your case study.
- Reflect on the broader implications of fake news in today’s media landscape. *use course material here
- INTRO ( – 1 page):
- RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS
- You are required to support your case study with credible sources including academic research, news articles, and/or fact-checking websites.
- Use APA style. for all in-text citations and references list.
- SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- APA formatrequired (title page, in-text citations, references list, etc.)
- Include your first & last name on the document
- Length: 3-4 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font.
- Include a references list with properly formatted citations.
- Submit your case study as a Word document.
