Students will be divided into pairs to facilitate a group during the final six (6) weeks of the course. Each group will submit one (1) paper.
- Due to the sensitivity of practicing group therapy skills on fellow students (versus mental health clients in the community), topics for the groups in this class will focus on professional development (i.e., Self-Care, Stress Management, etc.) versus traditional mental health topics (i.e., Anxiety, Depression, etc.).
- With your co-facilitator(s), you will prepare a package of tools for your therapy group to be included.
- Paper length: 7 to 9 pages double-spaced (not counting APA cover page, references, and Marketing Flyer (included as appendix A)
- Paper Sections:
- Backgrounder Section: Using APA formatting, summarize relevant literature on your topic to show the relevance and need for the group topic selected, as a backgrounder for group participants and/or other counsellors who might facilitate a group like this in the future. In essence, you are making an argument based on what you have learned from the literature about why this group is necessary and beneficial for clients. Cite a minimum of 4 6 relevant recent (last 10 years) peer reviewed journal articles. (3 – 5 pages)
- Group Outline Section: Create a detailed outline in the form of a chart for your therapy group, identifying topics and process/activities for your session. (1 page)
- Annotated Bibliography Section: Prepare an annotated reference list including at least 3-5 relevant articles, websites, or other resources on your topic helpful to give clients attending group (group participants) or to potential future group leaders. These will be different from your backgrounder references discussed in #2.
- Group Therapy Marketing Flyer: Create a one-page Group Therapy Marketing Flyer for the Therapy group you have created. This will be Appendix A of this assignment. In this marketing flyer, you will introduce your professional development therapy group topic and write a brief description that would be useful for attracting group members directly or referrals from other professionals. Include 3 5 learning objectives (what participants will gain by attending the group). Include your group coordination and co-leaders names and contact information.
Submission Guidelines:
Follow APA guidelines (7th edition) for general writing and citing references for your topical backgrounder. You can use a more creative format for your marketing flyer, outline, and annotated reference list as these three items will be created as handouts for your participants to use as references as participants or future group leaders.
Due: March 29 (Week 9) –This is where you will upload 1 copy of the assignment.
