I believe offenders who commit hate crimes should receive more severe penalties than people who commit similar crimes without a bias motive. Hate crimes do not only harm the individual victim, but they also affect an entire community. When someone is targeted because of their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, it can make others in that group feel unsafe or afraid. Because of this, the harm spreads beyond just one person.
In sociology, we learn that society is made up of many different groups, and everyone should be treated equally. Hate crimes go against this idea because they are meant to intimidate or threaten a whole group of people. For example, if someone vandalizes a place of worship because of the religion of the people who attend there, it sends a message of fear to that entire religious community.
According to many lectures and readings, hate crime laws are meant to protect communities and discourage discrimination and violence. Giving stronger penalties can show that society does not accept crimes motivated by hate. For these reasons, I think hate crimes should be punished more seriously than other similar crimes.
