Gender Credentials

This document is meant to capture your gender identity as you currently understand it. Consider it a hybrid of several genresan ID card, a resume, an arts n crafts project, a social networking portfoliobut bear in mind that were asking you to conduct a healthy dose of analysis and to be as candid as possible. ** We will discuss each piece of the gender credentials project in class as a mini-workshop. Toward the end of the term, you will put together the pieces you have started in class and submit as one individual project.

At minimum, your Credentials should include the following:

  • Opening characterization of your gender identity. Address reality (i.e., how you think you really are, or what you live up to currently), fantasy (i.e., how you wish to be, or to what you would aspire in the absence of constraint), and fear (i.e., the kind of gender identity you especially wish to avoid, or how you do not want to come off). Briefly, summarize the major evidence upon which your reality claims are based; explain why your aspiration is not (yet) fulfilled and what it would take to do so; and describe how you stave off undesirable gender.
  • Intersectional analysis. Explain how your opening characterization interacts with (relates to, stems from, is enabled and constrained by, etc.) other aspects of your identity, specifically (a) body/physicality/appearance, (b) age, (c) race/ethnicity, (d) class (i.e., socio-economic position), (e) religion, (f) sexuality, (g) regional & national origin, (h) abilities & disabilities, (i) mental and physical health, and/or any other factors you deem relevant that are not listed here. Which of these factors feel most significant or pressing to you, and why do you suppose that is?
  • Situational variation. How and to what extent would you say that your gender identity varies by situation? Identify specific contexts (e.g., with family, at work, on a date, hanging with same- or other-sex friends) in which your gender identity tends to shift, and tell us about those adaptations (e.g., what situational cues and identity desires/threats do you tend to respond to and why)? Or if you think your gender identity leans more toward constancy, provide examples of stability across situations.
  • Education and mentors. Identify and explain what you consider to be your formative gender experiences thus far, as well as major (positive or negative) models who have guided you.
  • Most repeated/enforced messages. If you had to identify the top 3 or so gender messages (explicit or subtle) that youve encountered over time, what would they be?
  • List all the activities in which you participate that support the gender identity youve claimed. Think broadly here, as these may include a wide range of activitiessuch as daily rituals or habits, specific relationships, the kind of work you (wish to) do, hobbies and leisure activities, political or religious involvementsyou name it! (How) would your activities have to change in order to support your gender fantasy?
  • Include 2-3 artifacts that somehow represent, embody, reflect, or evoke the identity youve claimed here. Artifacts may be textual (e.g., a favorite poem or song lyrics), visual (e.g., images from a magazine that grab your eye), or both (e.g., a description of some meaningful material artifact). The key here is to clarify the relation between the artifact and your gender identity. In other words, as long as that relationship is made clear, the format is up to you.

This assignment is supposed to be about myself. I have attached my resume to here, so you can get a better grasp of who I am. Also, here is a little bit more about myself to help you out; I am from Westfield, New Jersey, 21 years old, I have a younger brother at San Diego State University, I used to go to Arizona State University before transferring to CU Boulder, I grew up playing lacrosse and basketball at an all boys catholic school called Seton Hall Prep. My favorite genre of music is house and classic rock.

Now that you know a little bit about me, please complete this assignment to the best of your ability, if you have to make stories and scenarios up in the paper about myself, then feel free to do so. Thank you.
