Evaluating Epidemiological Studies Using STROBE Guidelines

Completion of the STROBE

Selection of Study: Choose an epidemiological study from a reputable journal. Ensure that the study is:

  1. observational in nature and one of the primary bioscience study designs (e.g., cohort, case-control, cross-sectional)
  2. includes one of the following epidemiological statistics as part of the findings (rates, ratios, proportions, p-values, survival analysis, correlation)
  3. is recent (within the last five years) and
  4. is relevant to the field of study.

Part 1: STROBE completion

Course Outcome addressed in this part:

HS340-6: Analyze epidemiological research using the STROBE.

Study Evaluation: Select the appropriate version of the STROBE for your study type. Using the STROBE, assess each section of the STROBE checklist, inputting your answers for each section directly on the instrument. (Copied and pasted)

Part 2: Narrative

Course outcome addressed in this part: HS340-5: Interpret common epidemiologic data.

Overview: Provide a one paragraph summary of the study and its key findings.

Level of Prevention: Identify which level of prevention the study or its findings are relevant to.

Findings: Share the specific statistical findings from the study (copy and pasted) and then share your interpretation of the epidemiological statistics from within the study. Do NOT summarize their reporting of the data, provide an explanation of:

  1. why this particular statistical test was appropriate for the data
  2. what the guidance is for statistical significance or relevance for the test used
  3. what were their statistical findings
  4. how do you interpret those findings? i.e., is it statistically significant?

NOTE: Be sure to number your items so they are easily identifiable. Add part 2 as a section under the STROBE for your answers. Use subheadings to identify the major sections of part 2, for example: Overview, Level of prevention, Findings and Conclusions. These should be formatted in accordance with APA formatting standards.

Conclusions: What does it mean? What is the practical significance of the study and its findings?
