For much of the twentieth century, Western feminist scholarship portrayed African women primarily as passive victims of patriarchal domination and primitive cultural practices. Drawing on Nakanyike Musisis work on Ganda women and elite polygyny, as well as Susan Pedersens discussion of colonial sexual politics, critically assess this characterization. How did Ganda women actively shape state formation, gender relations, and power structures in pre- colonial and colonial contexts?
