Social Conformity Proposition: Individuals must have the freedom to think, question, and explore ideas-even controversial ones. Opposition: Communities have the right to enforce shared beliefs and suppress ideas they consider dangerous.
Separation of Church and State vs. Religious Influence in Public Institutions
Proposition: There should be a clear separation between religious doctrine and government policy. Opposition: Public institutions-including schools-should reinforce the community’s religious values.
Inherit the Wind (1999) is built around a series of major, competing arguments-each one representing a deeper philosophical conflict about knowledge, freedom, education, religion, and democracy. The film dramatizes these arguments through courtroom exchanges, public speeches, and personal conversations. You may choose any of the following conflicting arguments depicted in the film or write your own assertions.
Your task is to:
Identify complete arguments from the film (each must include a clear assertion being argued, reasoning, and evidence).
Explain these arguments in your own words, demonstrating that you understand how they function in the film.
Take a position on the issue(s) by constructing your own arguments using logical reasoning, examples from the film, research about the historical case State of Tennessee v. John T. Scopes, and academic sources.
Support your claims with credible evidence and cite all sources using APA style.
